Raising attainment to keep pathways open
University of Essex Maths and Book Clubs
Maths and Book Clubs are making a big difference in local schools with the help of University of Essex students – recruited and trained by its Outreach Team. The clubs prioritise Year 10 GCSE Maths and English students at risk of not achieving passing grades at a moment where extra support for core subjects can be critical in progression to further study.
The clubs offer small group tutoring, in which enthusiastic and skilled University of Essex students bring energy and encouragement to pupils who often believe they're "just not good at it", showing them they can not only improve but truly belong in academic spaces.
Without passes in GCSE Maths and English, many doors to further study or jobs are closed. Working with partner schools, these schemes bridge the gap for students at risk of being left behind.
