Near-peer mentoring for local teenagers to boost aspiration and opportunity

The Schools Engagement Programme at Bayes Business School, City St George's, University of London pairs trained undergraduate mentors with secondary school pupils aged 15-17 from local London schools.

Since 2015, the programme has helped young people develop confidence, improve study skills and make informed decisions about university, professional pathways and future careers. Pupils report that mentoring helped them organise their workload more effectively and gain a clearer understanding of which universities to apply to. An eight-year impact report found the programme supports social mobility of the school pupils involved while also developing the employability and leadership skills of the university student mentors. The initiative demonstrates how universities can help reduce the risk of young people becoming disengaged from education or employment.
