Moving young people on the margins to the centre

SOAS’s teen-led workshops on migration and marginalisation

Each year, SOAS brings more than 100 secondary school students, aged 13 to 18, onto campus for a day of workshops exploring migration, marginalisation and wider social science themes. Many are from migrant backgrounds, where NEET rates tend to be higher, and are still developing confidence in English.

The sessions, run as part of the national ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, invite students to make research meaningful by connecting it with their own experiences, while campus tours and conversations with SOAS students give them a clearer sense of university life. Teachers have seen students grow in confidence, curiosity and ambition, with one describing the visit as having "planted the seed of curiosity or possibility."
