UniCares: Supporting care leavers into higher education and employment
Young people leaving care are among the groups most at risk of becoming not in education, employment or training (NEET).
Through its UniCares programme, City St George's, University of London provides tailored support for care leavers and care-experienced students from pre-entry through to graduation and employment, including contextual admissions, dedicated pastoral support, bursaries of up to £2,500 per year, year-round accommodation support, mentoring, careers guidance and priority access to wellbeing services. Students describe the programme as transformational. As one care-experienced student, Olufemi, said: "Without the financial and accommodation support that I received from UniCares, I wouldn't have had a good experience at university. I have really appreciated knowing that there is someone there to support me if I need it." By removing practical and financial barriers to success, and offering tailored support, UniCares helps care leavers and care-experienced students access higher education, stay on course and progress into graduate careers. UniCares also provides specialist support for those with significant unpaid caring responsibilities and young adults who are estranged from their families. The programme helps young adults stay engaged in education and progress successfully into graduate careers despite the additional pressures they face.
