Working in partnership with schools and colleges
Targeted outreach delivered by the Humber Outreach Programme (HoP)
The University of Hull works leads the Humber Outreach Programme (HOP), which works in partnership with local schools and colleges to support disadvantaged young people to develop the confidence, skills and aspirations needed to stay in education and progress. These are three examples of its groundbreaking work with pupils at critical stages of secondary education.
The Future Thinking programme has supported more than 800 young people across the Humber, transforming their attainment by teaching Year 8 pupils how to think, not just what to learn. Using careers education and labour market information, the programme enables students to explore opportunities and understand the skills they'll need, helping them make informed decisions about their future and turning aspirations into achievable pathways.
The Oracy programme works with Year 9 students building confidence, communication and critical-thinking skills to underpin future success. The programme boosts self-belief and prepares pupils for key educational and career transitions.
In Year 10, HOP’s Outreach Coordinators provide personalised one-to-one mentoring, giving targeted support at a pivotal moment. Focusing on areas where progression to higher education has historically been low and the risk of NEET is high, young people are empowered to set meaningful goals, overcome barriers and make informed choices about their future.
