Understanding what is driving the NEET challenge
Essex’s research dives deep into the risk factors of becoming NEET
Our understanding of the causes of NEET and therefore what may be effective interventions is led by university research such as a study by researchers at the University of Essex and University College London. They showed that the intersection of growing up in a deprived area and struggling with mental health issues makes British teenagers significantly more likely to be NEET.
The findings from ‘Equalise: ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity’ found young people facing both disadvantages were especially at risk and they also showed poor mental health was becoming an increasing issue among younger generations. The study shows the need to focus on young people's mental health and to target support for disadvantaged communities and intervention while children are still at school.
