University of Sussex

The University of Sussex is a diverse and globally-minded community of staff and students, with a thriving network of over 200,000 alumni in over 150 countries. Since our foundation in the early 1960s, Sussex has made ground-breaking, intellectually disruptive and transformational contributions to knowledge in the physical and life sciences, in artificial intelligence and informatics, in science, technology and innovation policy and management, in post-colonial thought and global studies, sexuality and gender studies, media and cultural studies, and across the disciplines of the social sciences and humanities.

With six Nobel prizes awarded over recent decades for research carried out at Sussex, and ranked first in the world for Development Studies (QS World University Rankings 2025) for nine consecutive years , Sussex academics have always driven scientific, technological and societal innovation and progress. In UK research assessments, most recently REF 2021, we have been highly ranked for research power, market share, and overall research quality, and The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 placed Sussex joint 42nd globally for International Outlook and 133rd globally for Research Quality. In terms of innovation and knowledge exchange, Sussex was ranked in the top 20% of universities nationally for IP and commercialisation, research partnerships, working with business, and working with the public and third sector (KEF 5, 2025).

Our current strategy, Sussex 2035: Creating Progressive Futures – flourishing, sustainability and progress for the whole world, builds on our strengths and commits us to focusing our research, innovation, and educational offer on tackling the urgent interdisciplinary challenges of environmental sustainability, human flourishing and digital and data futures over the coming decade.
